Friendship Group supports those affected by dementia

First published on: 1st May 2024

Support groups are often a lifeline; a place for people to share struggles and be supported by others in similar situations. One such community group is based at St Peter’s, Halliwell, where a monthly Friendship Group provides support for anyone affected by dementia. Joan Johnson started the group after seeing the devastating impact of dementia on congregation members at her church – both on those suffering from the disease and on their carers too. Having learnt about dementia as part of the ALM Pastoral Care course, Joan’s PCC agreed on the proposal of the group and it was established in October 2022.

Joan now works with a small group of volunteers to welcome over ten regular attendees from across Bolton. They come along to relax, have a chat, enjoy a brew and cake and take part in a variety of group activities. Two particularly popular activities are the monthly quiz and the group sing-along for which a volunteer comes and plays the piano. The group also celebrates special occasions, recently marking a diamond wedding anniversary by getting an arrangement of the couple’s wedding day flowers and a lovely cake. The couple were thrilled!

“We’ve made Christmas cards, arranged flowers, been visited by carol singers, and been on community walks in the local park too. People love the social aspect of the group”, says Joan, “it helps with isolation and loneliness.”

The Friendship Group asks for a donation of just £1 to attend, which is to cover costs, and Joan also offers support beyond the group by visiting group members at home or calling them on the phone if they can't attend in person. The group meets every third Thursday of the month, with the next meeting dates being 15th May, 20th June, and 18th July.
