An update on our proposals for mission communities

First published on: 22nd June 2021

Following an extensive consultation on the initial proposals for mission communities and feedback from over 1000 people, we publish an update on the proposals. In response to requests for more information the update includes a practical guide to mission communities, more information on roles and responsibilities and a broad timetable for implementation.

Having been discussed at Diocesan Synod in June, the document Transforming Manchester Diocese: Update on our Mission Community Proposals is available online.

We believe that the creation of mission communities will help us to achieve our 10-year vision for our diocese by releasing the missional energy of lay and ordained people. By 2030, we want to be a growing church, focused on discipleship and evangelism, serving individuals and communities across our diocese.

Parishes are now organised into seven deaneries, each led by a new, full-time Area Dean who were licensed at Manchester Cathedral on 6 June. Over the coming months, the Area Deans will be in contact with all parishes to discuss the proposals and listen to their views – especially on the mission community boundaries - before putting forward a final set of recommendations for the new mission community boundaries in November 2021.

Our mission community proposals are not about imposing a detailed blue-print on the diocese. They deliberately provide for a high degree of flexibility, and every opportunity for local engagement and local choices.

Once we have agreed how the mission communities will be organised, we start the most important work of all – how we can work together better on the ground to achieve that vision we share for us to become that growing, nurturing and serving church, that we so long for.

We continue to pray for our transformation programme, with a monthly online prayer meeting led by Bishop Mark Davies. Details of how to join the next prayer event can be found at www.manchester.anglican.org/prayer/

Your feedback is important

All your opinions are important to us and are helping us to discern the way forward as we continue to develop and refine the proposals over the coming months.

We are still open to receiving feedback on the proposals for mission communities and invite you to email us at differentworld@manchester.anglican.org with any further comments.
