It was with great sadness that we learned of the news of the passing of Canon Geoffrey Tattersall KC on 5th January, aged 77, who served the Diocese of Manchester with exceptional dedication and distinction for over three decades.
A distinguished KC, Geoffrey was known in the diocese and the wider Church of England for his fairness, kindness, and his exemplary leadership. His service within the diocese, including as Chancellor from 2004 to 2022, Lay Chair of Bolton from 1993 to 2002 and Chair of the House of Laity for Diocesan Synod from 1994 to 2003, earned him the respect of all who worked alongside him.
In 2003, Geoffrey was made an Honorary Lay Canon of Manchester Cathedral in recognition of his service, and in March 2024 was admitted to the Order of William Temple, a testament to his lifelong commitment to the Church’s mission.
A faithful worshipper at Christ Church Heaton in Bolton, Geoffrey also contributed to the Church at a national level; for almost thirty years he served as a member of General Synod of the Church of England where he chaired complex and sensitive business, as well as volunteering his legislative skills. Geoffrey will be particularly remembered for his wise and fair chairing during recent discussions on Living in Love and Faith. His calm, patient approach to leadership made him a respected and trusted figure within the Church. He has also served as Chancellor of Carlisle Diocese and Vicar General of the Diocese of Sodor and Man.
Reflecting on Geoffrey's life and work, Bishop David shared: "I am deeply saddened by the death of Geoffrey Tattersall, our former Diocesan Chancellor. He served the Church of England from parish to national level with great distinction. His wise judgement and gentle humour from the chair defused many a tricky session of the General Synod."
The Ven Dr Rachel Mann, Archdeacon of Salford and Bolton and member of General Synod, added her words of condolence, saying, ‘Geoffrey was a great gift to the national, diocesan and local church. His warmth, wit and kindness both as Chancellor and as a Synod member brought light and calm in many challenging situations. His death is a huge loss.’
Geoffrey will be missed by all who had the privilege of working with him. We extend our sympathy and prayers to his wife Hazel at this time. May he rest in peace.
