A Special Evensong at Manchester Cathedral

Last night, Manchester Cathedral hosted a very special Evensong during which the Venerable Karen Smeeton was installed as Archdeacon of Rochdale, five new Honorary Canons and one new Lay Canon were installed, and the Revd Canon Anne Edwards was welcomed as Bishop David's Senior Chaplain.

Despite the weather, the Cathedral was filled with family, friends and supporters from around the diocese who had gathered together to mark this occasion.

During the service, the Ven Karen Smeeton was installed as Archdeacon of Rochdale and Residentiary Canon of the Cathedral and preached an excellent sermon on Moses and his father-in-law,. Karen has ministered in Manchester Diocese for 22 years, following her ordination as deacon at Manchester Cathedral in 2002 and then as priest in 2003.  She has served her entire ministry here ever since, firstly as curate in Lees Oldham and since then in Rochdale. Most recently, Karen has held the role of Area Dean of Rochdale.

Dean Rogers Govender then installed the following five new Honorary Canons and one Lay Canon. Honorary Canons are members of the clergy and laity who are honoured in recognition of their faithful service to the diocese and wider Church. Congratulations to:

  • The Revd Canon Nick Bundock
  • The Revd Canon Kate Burgess
  • The Revd Canon Janie Cronin
  • The Revd Canon Katy Cunliffe
  • The Revd Canon Omid Moludy
  • Canon Philip Geldard

Finally, Bishop David offered a warm welcome to his new Bishop's Chaplain, the Revd Canon Anne Edwards. Anne will serve alongside Bishop David acting as a support, confidant and advisor to his ministry.
