Renewal of Vows and Blessing of Oils services

First published on: 27th March 2024

On Holy Monday and Holy Tuesday, clergy and licensed lay leaders from across the diocese gathered together at Manchester Cathedral to share the Eucharist, renew their vows, and bless the sacred oils. The service on Monday was led by the Rt Revd Prof David Walker, Bishop of Manchester, and the service on Tuesday was led by the Rt Revd Stephen Race, Bishop of Beverley.

During the Blessing of the Oils the supply of oils was renewed, and these will be used during the coming year to anoint for healing, to anoint the baptised, the confirmed, and the ordained. Following the service, the sacred oils are distributed to each parish.

The Oil for Healing and Wholeness is used to anoint those who ask for healing and wholeness. For those who are dying, the last anointing strengthens them at the end of earthly life for any final struggle before entering into eternity and prepares them for the great healing of resurrection.

The Oil of Catechumens or Oil for signing with the cross is used to anoint those preparing for Baptism.

The Oil of Chrism is used to anoint after the Baptism has taken place, and at Confirmation and Ordination. The Chrism expresses the blessings of Christ and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

During the service, clergy and lay leaders also dedicate themselves afresh to His service, renewing their vows and commitments as stewards of the mysteries of God and ministers of his grace.

Our short film aims to share and celebrate these special services. More photos are available here.
