Bishop David's Christmas Message

First published on: 21st December 2023

The Rt Revd Prof David Walker, Bishop of Manchester, shares a message of love, joy and hope to all this Christmas.

Watch here or read in full:

"One of the most well-loved children's stories of the last century is C.S. Lewis's The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. It tells of the magical land of Narnia, which lies under a spell cast by a wicked enchantress, so that it was always winter, but never Christmas.

"Over the years of my life, I've seen many winters cold ones, mild ones, ones when the world has seemed largely at peace, ones when it has been torn by war.

"In my own family, there has been both happy winters, playing with children in the snow. And others saddened by bereavement and loss. But every one of those winters has had its Christmas, and 2023 will be no exception.

"No matter what else is going on, within and around us. The annual remembrance of the Birth of Jesus Christ can bring hope and joy and love into our midst.

"My prayer is that by that love, and joy and hope, we can enjoy our Christmas festivities and be strengthened to face whatever 2024 may hold in store for us.

"Wishing you a Merry Christmas."

Our clergy, lay leaders and volunteers work tirelessly throughout the year and especially over the festive period. Here, Bishop David extends a 'thank you' to all who give so much to their parishes, chaplaincies and schools.
