General Synod to Scargill House: Our partnership with Finland is thriving!

First published on: 18th July 2024

The Bishop of Tampere in Finland, the Rt Revd Matti Repo attended General Synod last week to speak about the joint work of confirmation training between our diocese and Tampere in Finland, which is centred around summer camps for confirmands - and provides a training ground for junior leaders. This partnership has been in place since 2004, meeting in Finland and at Scargill House, Yorkshire.

Two young leaders who attended last year's camp at Scargill presented to General Synod, explaining the joy of meeting other young Christians and of "a culture that reaches your life, opens your eyes, and lets you see the world differently".

Synod gave them a warm welcome and sustained applause following a video presentation featuring Canon Susie Mapledoram, Assistant Director of Education. This short film can be viewed at the link below.

This year’s camp has just taken place with the Finnish youngsters returning to Finland on Tuesday ready to be confirmed on Sunday.

Bishop Mark also attended Scargill this week, saying, "I am pleased and blessed to join young people and their leaders at the Tampere and Manchester Confirmation Camp at Scargill House. Clearly they’re having a wonderful time. The Diocese of Manchester’s link with Tampere Diocese is a gift."
