The Venerable David Sharples, Archdeacon of Rochdale, has announced that he is to retire at the end of March. His last day in office will be 31st March 2024.
David has served in the diocese for more than 40 years, having been ordained deacon at Manchester Cathedral in the autumn of 1982.
David carried out his curacy at St Mary, Prestwich, where he also held the role of duty chaplain at Prestwich Hospital. He then served as Vicar at St Anne, Royton for 15 years. Throughout his career, David has held the roles of Diocesan Director of Ordinands and OLM Development Officer before taking on the position of Archdeacon of Salford.
In 2017, David was made Residentiary Canon at Manchester Cathedral, and in 2020 he also took on the role of Archdeacon of Rochdale.
The Rt Revd Prof David Walker said, "David has been a tremendous servant to Manchester Diocese, as parish priest, Director of Vocations and Archdeacon. Many clergy will have him to thank for accompanying them on their vocational journey. Many church members will be grateful for his support and care, especially in working with them during vacancies. I know from my own direct experience, over these last ten years, just how much his gentle wisdom in our meetings, and his pastoral heart for all Gods people, have helped shape the culture of our diocese.
A service of thanksgiving for his ministry will be held in April, with more details to follow soon.
