Bishop David addresses the House of Lords

Bishop David addressed the House of Lords yesterday during the Autumn Statement debate. He welcomed the uprating of benefits and local housing allowance, and the increase to the national living wage. Bishop David expressed concern for those facing homelessness, including those in steady employment, a trend that is becoming more common in Manchester. Watch the full speech below:

He highlighted one of the opportunities missed and explained the need for more funding for mental health care in community and hospital settings to respond to the mental health crisis.

Bishop David also shared practical examples of the support being offered to those struggling to afford everyday tasks such as washing clothes. He applauded the work being carried out by the Revd Paul Monk and his team at St Barnabas, Oldham in offering a free launderette alongside other essentials for the community.

Finally, Bishop David called for the government to set out a bold, long-term vision for the future of the country.
