On Sunday 25th June, Bishop Matthew was welcomed to the diocese during a special Evensong service at Manchester Cathedral. Despite the typically Mancunian weather, civic representatives, clergy and supporters from the diocese attended to witness Matthew's installation and worship together.
The service was conducted by the Venerable David Sharples, Archdeacon of Rochdale and Sub-Dean of the Cathedral. The Rt Revd Prof David Walker gave a blessing and The Rt Revd Dr Matthew Porter preached the sermon.
Following his consecration as Bishop of Bolton at York Minster, and installation as a supernumary canon of the Cathedral, Matthew has now formally started his duties in the diocese.
During Matthew's first sermon as Bishop, he spoke of the healing power of the Holy Spirit and the transformational power of God. Following the service, Bishop Matthew invited members of the congregation to come to him for a blessing and to be anointed with oil.
Thank you to all who attended this special service, it was great to see so many people gathered together as we mark this special moment in the life of our diocese.
