Bishop of Guyana visits Manchester Diocese

First published on: 19th June 2023

It is 75 years since Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury, Essex carrying passengers from the Caribbean ready to start a new life in the UK. To mark this occasion, the Bishop of Manchester, the Right Reverend Prof David Walker, has invited The Rt Revd Charles Davidson, Bishop of Guyana, to visit Manchester Diocese.

During this visit, Bishop David and Bishop Charles are meeting with local people and organisations and taking part in events to mark the anniversary of Windrush.

Saturday 17th June

Bishop Charles joined us at Diocesan Synod in the morning. He led our worship and opening address, which focussed on the abundance of God's blessings.

Bishop Charles and Bishop David then enjoyed afternoon tea at St James and St Edmund's, Moss Side. The Ven Karen Lund, Archdeacon of Manchester and Canon Dr Adanna (Addy) Lazz-Onyenobi Lay Chair of Manchester South and Stretford were in attendance.

Sunday 18th June

Bishop Charles was interviewed on BBC Radio Manchester.

He then preached the sermon at Manchester Cathedral at a service to mark the 75th anniversary of the Windrush arrivals.

Morning

On Monday morning, Bishop Charles visited Trinity Church of England High School and Sixth Form, a diverse and multicultural school based in the heart of the city. The school has a vibrant student population, with many students coming from minority ethnic heritages. The Bishop enjoyed a tour of the school, meeting with various members of staff, including Ms R Ripley, Lead Practitioner for Diversity Equality and Inclusion, Revd Dr Steve Birkinshaw, School Chaplain, and Mr Julian Nicholls, the Head Teacher of Trinity High School and Sixth Form.

Bishop Charles spotted the flag of Guyana in the Sixth Form canteen! Can you see it too?
