Helen Platts to Retire in March 2026

Today, we share the news that Helen Platts, our Chief Operating Officer and Diocesan Secretary, will be retiring in March 2026.

Helen joined the Diocese of Manchester in February 2019, and her leadership has been instrumental during a period of significant change and challenge. She guided the organisation through the pandemic, secured substantial funding for new resource churches and racial justice work, and introduced a wide range of initiatives to support parishes - including church revitalisation and building grants, contactless giving devices, and financial support tools.

Alongside her commitment to strengthening parish life, Helen has been working towards ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of the diocese. Among her many achievements, Helen directed the sale of Church House, Deansgate, and the successful relocation of the diocesan offices to St John’s House Bury. Most recently, she has led the development of a substantial bid to the Church Commissioners, aiming to secure funding that will support the mission and ministry of our diocese for years to come - with a particular focus on growing younger, church planting and revitalisation, developing missional leaders and parish renewal.

Helen will be greatly missed. We are deeply grateful for her unfailing dedication, wisdom, and service. There will be many opportunities to say goodbye and celebrate her time with us over the coming months.

Helen said:

"It has been a privilege to serve the Diocese of Manchester over the past six years. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside so many committed and inspiring colleagues, and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together. I look forward to the next chapter, but will always carry with me a deep affection for the people and mission of this diocese."

Reflecting on his time working with Helen, Bishop David Walker commented:

"Helen has brought outstanding leadership, clarity, and commitment to her role. Her legacy will be felt for many years to come, and we are profoundly grateful for all she has given to the life of our diocese. She will leave with our prayers, thanks, and warmest wishes for the future."

Canon John Walsh, OBE and Chair of the Diocesan Board of Finance added:

“Helen has served the diocese with exceptional devotion, clear purpose, and a deep sense of responsibility. Her ability to lead through complexity and change has been remarkable, and her achievements are a result of thoughtful, strategic leadership. We are grateful for all she has contributed and for the steady hand she has brought to every challenge.”

The recruitment for Helen’s replacement will begin next month with the aim of ensuring a smooth handover next year.
