Today is Holocaust Memorial Day, which takes place on 27th January each year to remember the six million Jews murdered during World War Two. It also commemorates the millions of people outside the Jewish faith who were murdered through Nazi persecution and those targeted in more recent genocides. This year’s Holocaust Memorial Day holds special significance as it marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest of the Nazi concentration camps, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.
Pupils from across our diocese have been reflecting on various aspects of the Holocaust, exploring themes of love, hope, and peace through art. Their work is currently on display in Manchester Cathedral's Jesus Chapel until Thursday, 30th January 2025. All are invited to visit, to view the art, and take a moment to pause, reflect, and remember. These photos were taken during the launch of the exhibition on Thursday, 23rd January 2025.
Pray with us for a better future using this prayer from the Council of Christians and Jews:
A Prayer for Holocaust Memorial Day 2025
Eternal God,
we come before You
to remember the victims of the Holocaust.
We lament the loss of the six million Jews
who were killed in the Holocaust,
the millions of other victims of Nazi persecution,
and victims of all genocides.
As we remember and lament
all those whose lives have been lost
help us to work for a better future today.
We pray for a day when all shall be free
to live in peace, unity and love.
Amen.
