Manchester and Salford Ecumenical Whit Walk 2024

First published on: 28th May 2024

Yesterday, Manchester City Centre welcomed back the Whit Walks, a tradition spanning 200 years and still going strong today. Churches from across the diocese came together, as they have done since 1801, and processed through city streets lined with people who came to show their support.
Dean Rogers Govender led the worship with the crowds gathered on St Peter's Square, and Bishop Matthew Porter preached. The procession then headed back to Manchester Cathedral, led by fantastic bands including Greenfield Brass Band, Manchester Regiment Church Lads, and Christ Church Ashton Church Lads and Church Girls Brigade. It was wonderful to see such a great turnout – in spite of the wet weather!

Thank you to all those involved in organising this special event, especially Revd Canon Daniel Burton and Revd Caroline Hewitt. Thank you also to the parishes who took part in the walk and to everyone who came out to support them.

If you would be interested in joining the organising committee for next year’s Manchester and Salford Whit Walk, please email Revd Canon Daniel Burton at: ashworthburton@hotmail.com
